History

Definition of Health Management

Health management is the process of planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating healthcare resources and services to improve health outcomes for individuals and communities. It integrates clinical care, preventive strategies, policy, and organizational leadership to ensure that health resources are effective, efficient, and equitable.

As an essential component of health systems, health management applies management principles and practices in healthcare settings to strengthen leadership, improve service delivery, and enhance better health outcomes.

As highlighted by the World Health Organization:

“Strengthening the management capabilities within the health system is being increasingly seen as a critical strategy for improving the performance of healthcare delivery and building health systems.”

(WHO-EMRO, Health Management: An Important Component of Health Systems, 2005).

Health management encompasses the planning, resource allocation, and implementation of policies to effectively address community health risks and needs. It requires the collective efforts of governments, organizations, professionals, and individuals to ensure health security and to promote overall well-being.

Founding Story

The Malaysia Health Management Association (MHMA) was founded in 2025 by a group of visionary healthcare professionals and health-conscious leaders from diverse backgrounds. United by a shared commitment to advancing management practices in Malaysia’s health system, they came together in response to the growing need for structured healthcare leadership, collaborative knowledge exchange, and innovative solutions in Malaysia’s evolving health landscape.

Healthcare is not only about medicine—it begins with prevention. This belief became the foundation of MHMA. We are dedicated to building systems that empower professionals, nurture future leaders, and equip communities with the knowledge they need to live healthier lives. By bringing together administrators, doctors, nurses, nutritionists, dietitians, consultants, academics, policymakers, and innovators, MHMA stands on one mission: to pioneer a stronger, more innovative healthcare management framework for Malaysia.
